Peyote Stitch

The stitch we call peyote was originally employed (in this country) to decorate gourds used in the peyote ceremonies of the Native American Church, and for this reason tubular peyote is also known as the gourd stitch. Although they probably developed it independently, Native Americans weren’t the first to use the stitch; examples have been found in Africa from as far back as ancient Egypt.

Peyote stitch sometimes gets a bad rap for two reasons: one, it can be difficult to start, and two, the turnaround at the end of every other row in odd count peyote is tedious. To me, these are minor considerations when you consider that it is one of the most versatile single needle, off loom beading techniques we have. It can be done flat, round, tubular or freeform, and once you get past the first two rows it’s a breeze because the next stitches you will pass through are popped up where they are easy to see and needle through. Never fear this stitch because people have devised ingenious methods for resolving both issues.

March - The Month of Peyote Stitch

We will be announcing a theme for each month in our ArtFire Beadweavers Guild. This month is the month of Peyote Stitch. Over this month there will be guest posts from some of our members with everything from basics of the stitch to the most creative peyote creations.

As a way to grow interest and activity in our Guild, we have also designed some fun ways to participate in this months theme.

The first way is through a 'Bead-A-Long'.

Today we start!!

What we would like you to do is to start a new project - it can be little or big, simple or complicated - in a PEYOTE stitch format. We will be providing you with some links for FREE PATTERNS if you need some, later in the week.

Once you get started please feel free to post photos via our Fan Page and the album that will be set up there. The goal is to have our projects finished on/before April 1st so that we can start a NEW Bead-A-Long for next months theme. Feel free to post photos of 'works in progress' and your finished project at ANY TIME on our Fan Page.

Here is the first 'simple' instruction sheet we'd like to show you. This one is via Fire Mountain Gems.

It is the most basic start to the Peyote Stitch.

Step 1 - Cut a length of thread (Nymo® or FireLine®) to a comfortable length for you to work with.The longer your thread, the farther you can work before you will have to add a new thread.

Optional: You can add a stop bead to your thread if you'd like. The stop bead will help keep your first row of beads in place while the peyote pattern develops. Be sure not to incorporate your stop bead into your beadwork.

Almost double your thread to make it easier to work with, but do leave a tail so you are working with only one thread.

Step 2 - Following the instructions for your project, string the first row of beads onto your thread. This should be an even amount.

Step 3

String on one bead, pass the needle through the next-to-last bead strung on the thread then pull the thread to tighten the beads up.

Step 4

String on a bead, skip the next bead in the row then pass the needle through the bead after that. Pull the thread to tighten the beads up.

Step 5

Turn your work around so you are working in the same direction as the last row. Notice how the stitch has created an up and down pattern.

Pick up a bead and pass your needle through the first 'popped up' bead. Continue to pick up a bead and pass the needle through the popped up beads, until you make your way across the length of the row.

Step 6

Repeat Step 5 until you reach the length the project instructions indicate.

Now, here are the rules and dates:

This Swap is among beadweavers only, so please send enough seed beads, beads and colors for another bead weaver to complete at least one necklace. You will need to include (at minimum) once focal or centerpiece and (at minimum) one clasp. Your focal or centerpiece should be something that can either be framed or woven into a project and your clasp should be something more than just a lobster claw. You do NOT need to send gold or silver findings, however if you want to you can.

Remember that your partner may/may not be an experienced beadweaver. You do not want to send them something that is from your 'junk drawer' or that you haven't been able to figure out what to do with. This Swap is meant to be fun and challenging! Send things that YOU would use - remember, they will be putting YOUR name on their creation and on their blogs!

Step 1 - Please contact your partner - via ArtFire Studio message and get their address.

Step 2 - Send out your Bead Swap package to your partner - no later than March 15th

Step 3 - Take photos of the swap you receive

Step 4 - Post photos on your own blog, facebook, twitter or on the Guild's facebook page or the Guild Forums Page . (please tag or link your posts to the GUILD'S sites so that everyone can see and find you)

Step 4 - Create, create, create

Step 5 - Post photos (this is optional) of your work in progress, but do NOT reveal your entire creation until Reveal day.

Step 6 - Reveal your creation on May 15th

ArtFire Beadweaver's Guild 1st Bead Swap

Announcing our first ArtFire Beadweavers Swap.

Please join with your fellow guild members in a Bead Swap. Each Participant will be paired with another beader on/before the March 1st. You will then send a 'swap' package to your partner by the 15th of March. Then you will create something with the beads you receive and publish them on our sites as well as yours. Each swap package should have a focal bead and a special clasp. There should also be enough beads to complete at least ONE beadwoven project.

Finished project will be do on May 15th.

If you are interested in participating, please put your shop name and email in the comments below and you'll be contacted on/around the first for the next step!

We have updated our rules a little. Here is our new version! Please read them over and make sure you understand them. If you have any questions you can contact us at AFBeadweavers@yahoo.com

These rules are subject to change.

1) Quarterly Challenges. You MUST participate once a year in at least one Challenge or other event to stay active in the Guild.

2) Keep your shop stocked! Must have an average of 30% seed bead work/tutorials in your shop at all times, you may list a few supplies , but the majority of your shop should be creations and tutorials for bead weaving. This percentage may vary depending on the studio and will be voted on and approved by the officers of the Guild. If we see an empty shop, you will be removed from the Guild with no notice.

New members will have 60 days to list at least 10 items, 3 of which have to be seed beading (30%). After your shop is set up, we encourage you to apply for a 'Certified Handmade' artifact. You must have 100% Handmade in your Studio for this. (Amendment: You will NOT be disqualified for being a Guild Member if you also sell tutorials and destash your bead supply. It is a lot of work to set up multiple Studios and keep track of both(all). We understand this.)

3) Please be active! Post new creations or patterns on any of our sites.

4) Make Collections from time to time with only members from our Guild. Cross reference your Collections onto Facebook and Twitter and all social networking sites that you use. Support and comment on collections that other members have created. Post links back to our sites from your sites – promoting our guild will help promote your work.

5) Failure to comply with any of our membership rules will result in your being removed from the Guild without notice.

6) Questions or concerns can be handled by any of our officers.

Mona aka 3 Peeps Designs won our November Challenge, therefore she chooses our next theme. Here is what she came up with:

I have been thinking about the theme for the next challenge and I have decided that I would like to see what the AB Guild members can come up with in relation to daytime television soaps. In particular, what they would create for their favorite daytime soap character to wear. Their favorite soap character can either be presently on air or not (a la Erica Kane from All My Children, who seems to be a favorite character.)
